Midostaurin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for anyone on midostaurin (Rydapt). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down and clear it out. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which may slow that same enzyme. If CYP3A4 works more slowly, midostaurin could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects, things like nausea, vomiting, low blood counts, fatigue, swelling, or an irregular heartbeat (QT changes).

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves in the lab, not proven in people taking midostaurin. Still, since this is a serious cancer drug, please don't add corydalis without first checking with your oncology team or pharmacist.

What Is Midostaurin Used For?

  • Midostaurin is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of acute myeloid leukemia (AML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells). Midostaurin is also used to certain types of mastocytosis (a blood disorder in which there are too many mast cells [a certain kind of white blood cell]). Midostaurin is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of mast and cancer cells.
