Quinine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Corydalis Yanhusuo interacts with.

Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for quinine: your body clears it largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which lab studies and a little early human research suggest can modestly slow that same enzyme. If quinine is cleared more slowly, more of it can hang around in your blood, which may nudge up its effects and side effects.

With quinine that matters because higher levels can bring on what's called cinchonism: ringing in the ears, headache, dizziness, nausea, or blurred vision. At the high end there are heart rhythm concerns too. This is a theoretical interaction, based mostly on how things work in the lab, not proven in people. Still, since quinine isn't a drug to take lightly, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Quinine Used For?

Brand name: Qualaquin

Quinine sulfate capsules (brands Qualaquin and Quinine Sulfate) are approved to treat uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in adults. This includes strains of malaria that have become resistant to chloroquine.

Quinine sulfate capsules are not approved for severe or complicated malaria, for preventing malaria, or for treating or preventing nocturnal leg cramps. Using them for leg cramps carries serious risks that outweigh any potential benefit.
