Saquinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Dhea interacts with.

Theoretically, DHEA might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some preliminary evidence shows that DHEA may inhibit CYP3A4; however, the clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.

Here's the gist for you. Saquinavir (Invirase) is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. There's some early, fairly thin evidence that DHEA may slow that enzyme down. If it does, your body could break Saquinavir down a little less efficiently, and levels in your blood might creep up. With this HIV medicine, higher levels could mean more of the usual complaints like nausea, diarrhea, belly discomfort, or changes in blood sugar and fats.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal data, so we don't really know how much it matters in real life. Please don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or HIV doctor a quick heads-up before adding DHEA so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Saquinavir Used For?

  • Saquinavir is used in combination with ritonavir (Norvir) and other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Saquinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although saquinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
