Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take venlafaxine (Effexor) and you're thinking about DHEA. This isn't really about how your body breaks the drug down. Instead, DHEA is a hormone your body turns into testosterone and estrogen, and tweaking those levels seems to nudge mood and brain chemistry. Stacked on top of an antidepressant that already boosts serotonin and norepinephrine, the worry is too much stimulation. There's a published case of someone on an antidepressant plus DHEA tipping into a manic episode.

So in plain terms, the combo could raise the odds of mood swings, racing thoughts, irritability, trouble sleeping, or feeling "wired." Honestly, the evidence here is thin, mostly theory and one case report, so don't panic. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding DHEA, especially if you're younger.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
