Here's the key thing to understand about this pairing: the interaction runs in the opposite direction from what people usually worry about. It's not that Evodia changes how your norgestrel (Ovrette) works. Instead, it's that norgestrel can act as a mild blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps break down one of Evodia's compounds (rutaecarpine). By slowing that breakdown, your birth control pill could, in theory, let more of Evodia build up in your body and make its effects a bit stronger.

Honestly, this is based only on lab and animal research, so it's quite theoretical and nothing about your contraception's reliability is in question here. Still, if you're thinking about using Evodia, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since Evodia isn't well studied in people.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down norgestrel, the progestin in your mini-pill. In test-tube studies, Evodia appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, your norgestrel levels could creep up a bit, which might mean more of its usual effects, things like spotting or breakthrough bleeding, breast tenderness, headaches, or mood changes.

The important caveat: this is only laboratory evidence. It has not been shown to actually happen in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, because steady hormone levels matter for birth control, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia. Don't start or stop anything on your own.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
