Melatonin + Norgestrel
Norgestrel brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21.
Norgestrel falls into 2 drug categories that Melatonin can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking contraceptive drugs with melatonin might increase the effects and adverse effects of melatonin.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Melatonin interacts with whole categories of medication. Norgestrel falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Melatonin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Norgestrel
Norgestrel falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Melatonin interacts with.
Contraceptive drugs can increase the levels of endogenous melatonin. Theoretically, these drugs may increase the effects and adverse effects of oral melatonin.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know about combining melatonin with your norgestrel birth control pill: the concern runs in one direction, toward the melatonin. Contraceptive hormones like norgestrel can slow down how your body breaks melatonin apart, so the melatonin you take (plus the small amount your body makes on its own) can hang around a bit longer and feel stronger.
In practice that might mean more next-day grogginess, daytime drowsiness, or vivid dreams. Norgestrel itself isn't being made weaker or stronger here, so your birth control should keep working the same. This is mostly theoretical and based on lower-quality studies, so don't panic. If melatonin leaves you extra sleepy, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor, who may suggest a lower dose.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Norgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Laboratory research shows that certain lots of melatonin inhibit CYP3A4. Theoretically, combined administration of melatonin with certain drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 may reduce the metabolism of these drugs, resulting in increased serum levels. Until more is known, use melatonin cautiously in patients taking drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your mini-pill. Norgestrel is an active hormone (not a prodrug), and your liver clears it partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Some lab batches of melatonin appear to slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more norgestrel linger in your system, which might mean slightly more of the usual progestin effects like spotting, breast tenderness, headache, or mood changes.
I want to be honest about the strength here: this is only test-tube and animal data, rated minor, so for most people it's unlikely to cause real trouble. Melatonin shouldn't make your pill less effective. Still, since timing and consistency matter so much with the mini-pill, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding melatonin.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Norgestrel page
“Norgestrel (Ovrette) is a progestin-only birth control pill, so the biggest danger on this page is not a strange side effect but a pill that quietly stops working. That risk makes this a page for genuine vigilance.”

About Melatonin
What is Melatonin?
- Trouble falling asleep (insomnia)
- Jet lag
- Delayed sleep phase syndrome
- Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder
- Shift-work sleep problems
- Sleep problems in some children with conditions like autism or ADHD
Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help control your sleep-wake cycle, and the supplement form is widely used to help with sleep timing problems and jet lag. The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.
About Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives
What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?
Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21
Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.
When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.

Norgestrel Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Norgestrel as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Melatonin — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
