Melatonin + Indomethacin
Indomethacin brand names: Indocin, Indocin SR, Indo-Lemmon, Indomethagan, Tivorbex.
Melatonin has a moderate interaction with Indomethacin. Theoretically, taking melatonin with drugs that lower the seizure threshold might increase the risk of seizure activity.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS
Why this applies to Indomethacin
Indomethacin falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Melatonin interacts with.
Some clinical evidence suggests that melatonin may increase the frequency of seizures in certain patients, particularly children with neurological disabilities.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for pairing melatonin with indomethacin (Indocin). Indomethacin is a strong anti-inflammatory (an NSAID), and like a number of medicines, it carries a small theoretical ability to lower the seizure threshold, meaning it could make seizures slightly easier to trigger in people who are already prone to them. Some reports suggest melatonin may bump up seizure frequency in certain folks, especially children with neurological conditions. Put together, the concern is a possible, very slight increase in seizure risk.
This one is theoretical and based on how these substances behave, not on strong human studies. For most people without a seizure history, it's unlikely to be an issue. If you or your child has epilepsy or any seizure disorder, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Melatonin
What is Melatonin?
- Trouble falling asleep (insomnia)
- Jet lag
- Delayed sleep phase syndrome
- Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder
- Shift-work sleep problems
- Sleep problems in some children with conditions like autism or ADHD
Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help control your sleep-wake cycle, and the supplement form is widely used to help with sleep timing problems and jet lag. The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.
About Indomethacin
What Is Indomethacin Used For?
Brand names: Indocin, Indocin SR, Indo-Lemmon, Indomethagan, Tivorbex
Indomethacin oral suspension and rectal suppository forms (including Indocin oral suspension and Indocin suppositories) are used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (including acute flares), moderate to severe ankylosing spondylitis (spine inflammation), moderate to severe osteoarthritis, acute painful shoulder (bursitis and/or tendinitis), and acute gouty arthritis. Oral capsules — both immediate-release and extended-release — share these same approved uses, except that extended-release capsules are not approved for acute gouty arthritis.
Indomethacin for Injection (intravenous) is a completely separate use: it is given to premature infants to close a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (a blood vessel near the heart that should close after birth but hasn't) when standard medical management has not worked.

Indomethacin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Indomethacin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Melatonin — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
