Melatonin + Bethanechol Chloride
Bethanechol Chloride brand name: Urecholine.
We found no known interaction between Melatonin and Bethanechol Chloride in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the label for Bethanechol Chloride states a food rule worth keeping to, and the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Melatonin and Bethanechol Chloride
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Bethanechol Chloride and Melatonin in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.
Melatonin safety at a glance
Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.
Why No Interaction Is Listed for Bethanechol Chloride
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Bethanechol Chloride is filed under 2 classifications — cholinergic drugs, oral drugs. Melatonin has documented interactions with 18 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), anticonvulsants (moderate) and antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Bethanechol Chloride’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Melatonin Does Interact With Other Medications
Melatonin has 1,116 moderate, 345 minor known drug interactions in our database — Bethanechol Chloride isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

Melatonin in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
When used orally or parenterally in high doses or with frequent use. High doses of melatonin 75-300 mg daily seem to inhibit ovulation, causing a contraceptive effect. Advise pregnant patients and patients wishing to become pregnant to avoid using melatonin frequently or in high doses. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of melatonin in lower doses during pregnancy. Some research shows that taking melatonin 2 mg daily does not affect anterior pituitary hormone levels in females who are not pregnant; this suggests that low doses may not have a contraceptive effect. Other research shows that taking melatonin 3 mg daily during the follicle stimulating stage of in vitro fertilization does not negatively impact pregnancy rates. However, it is not known if melatonin is safe for use throughout pregnancy. Until more is known about the safety of melatonin, avoid using during pregnancy.

Some Bethanechol Chloride Products Have a Food Rule — Melatonin Should Not Break It
At least one FDA label for a product containing Bethanechol Chloride says to take it with food. If you take Melatonin on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Bethanechol Chloride with a meal where the label says to.
This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Bethanechol Chloride products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.
If taken soon after eating, nausea and vomiting may occur.
From the Dosage and Administration section of the FDA label we read for Bethanechol Chloride — where that label names a specific product, the instruction is that product's. Read the label on DailyMed ›
A food rule is not an interaction — it is about how much of the medicine you absorb. The directions that came with your own product, and your pharmacist, outrank anything on this page.
Questions About Melatonin or Bethanechol Chloride
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Melatonin or Bethanechol Chloride, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

This page covers Melatonin only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Bethanechol Chloride page lists 38 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bethanechol Chloride page
“Anyone taking bethanechol chloride (Urecholine) for urinary retention should read this list carefully, starting with activated charcoal, the lone major-rated entry among the 38 ingredients here. Charcoal can bind bethanechol in the gut and sharply cut how much reaches your system, a real problem for a drug that has to get a sluggish bl…”

- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Melatonin reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 13, 2026. The Melatonin and Bethanechol Chloride records this page draws on were last updated July 11, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Melatonin
What is Melatonin?
- Trouble falling asleep (insomnia)
- Jet lag
- Delayed sleep phase syndrome
- Non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder
- Shift-work sleep problems
- Sleep problems in some children with conditions like autism or ADHD
Melatonin is a hormone your body makes naturally to help control your sleep-wake cycle, and the supplement form is widely used to help with sleep timing problems and jet lag. The evidence is strongest for certain circadian (body-clock) disorders and is more mixed for everyday insomnia. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially for children or during pregnancy.
Hormone naturally made by the pineal gland; supplements are usually made synthetically · Tablets, capsules, gummies, sublingual (under-the-tongue) tablets, liquids, extended-release tablets
An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Melatonin is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Melatonin record says about it on its own.
Melatonin: dosing
There is no single standardized dose of melatonin, and products vary widely in strength. Many people find that lower doses work as well as higher ones, and taking more does not always help more. Timing often matters as much as the amount, so for sleep timing problems and jet lag it is usually taken in the evening or before bedtime. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and start with the lowest amount that helps.

About Bethanechol
What Is Bethanechol Used For?
Brand name: Urecholine
Bethanechol Chloride Tablets are used to treat urinary retention — when the bladder holds urine but can't release it properly — in two specific situations: after surgery or childbirth (acute postoperative or postpartum nonobstructive urinary retention), and when weak bladder muscle caused by nerve problems (neurogenic atony) prevents normal emptying.
These are functional problems, meaning there's no physical blockage — the bladder simply isn't contracting the way it should.
