Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for prucalopride (Motegrity): it works on serotonin receptors in your gut to get things moving. Fermented wheat germ extract has been shown, in animal studies only, to nudge serotonin levels up in the brain. The concern is that stacking two things that touch the serotonin system could, in theory, add up and raise the odds of serotonin-related side effects like headache, nausea, dizziness, or feeling jittery.

I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical caution based on lab and animal data, not real human reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since you'd be taking both on purpose, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or oncologist before combining them, especially if you're on other serotonin-affecting meds too.

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract

What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?

  • Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
  • Immune support
  • General wellness during cancer treatment
  • Antioxidant support
  • Fatigue during illness

Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.

About Prucalopride

What Is Prucalopride Used For?

Brand names: Resotran, Resolor, Motegrity

Prucalopride tablets — sold under the brand name Motegrity and also available as generic prucalopride and prucalopride succinate — are indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. CIC is ongoing constipation with no identified underlying cause.

This indication applies to all approved oral tablet forms of prucalopride. It is not approved for use in children; a study in pediatric patients was stopped early because the medication did not show effectiveness in that age group.
