SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Paroxetine
Paroxetine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with paroxetine (Paxil) and fermented wheat germ extract. Paroxetine works by raising serotonin levels in your brain, which is how it helps with depression and anxiety. The concern on file is that fermented wheat germ extract might nudge serotonin up too, so stacking the two could theoretically add up and increase serotonin-related side effects.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from animal research, not human studies, so it's a theoretical caution rather than a proven problem. If it did happen, you might notice things like jitteriness, sweating, fast heartbeat, agitation, or shakiness. Those would be worth a call. Before combining these, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist so they can weigh it for your situation.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Paroxetine page
“I treat paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR, Brisdelle) as a medication where supplement choices genuinely matter, not one to wave through. This antidepressant raises serotonin, so about twenty of the ingredients listed here, lithium among them, can push serotonin too high and risk serotonin syndrome, a dangerous reaction.”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
