SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Doxepin
Doxepin falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with doxepin (whether you're using the Silenor sleep dose or the larger antidepressant doses). Doxepin is a tricyclic that nudges up serotonin activity in the brain. Animal studies hint that fermented wheat germ extract may also raise brain serotonin, so the worry is that stacking the two could push serotonin a little too high.
If that happened, you might notice things like jitteriness, a racing heart, sweating, shakiness, or feeling agitated. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal work, not on real people taking both together, so the actual risk looks low. Still, since you're going through cancer care, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them so someone who knows your full picture can weigh in.

“Doxepin is a sedating tricyclic prescribed for depression, anxiety, and often sleep itself, and the people taking it tend to shop the same shelf where the trouble sits. Of the 186 supplements on file, 78 deepen its drowsiness, with alcohol (beer and wine carry major, well-documented ratings) and kava the clearest examples, and I would…”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
