Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this pairing. When you take hydrocortisone for something like a flare of arthritis, a bad allergic reaction, or lupus, part of the goal is to calm down or quiet an overactive immune system. Fermented wheat germ extract, on the other hand, has been studied in animals for the opposite reason: it may stimulate immune activity. So in theory, the supplement could work against what the hydrocortisone is trying to do.

If that played out, you might notice the hydrocortisone not controlling your symptoms as well as usual (more swelling, stiffness, or itching). I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not proven in people. It's still worth mentioning to your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them, especially if your steroid dose is carefully managed.

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract

What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?

  • Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
  • Immune support
  • General wellness during cancer treatment
  • Antioxidant support
  • Fatigue during illness

Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
