SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Wheat Germ Extract interacts with.
Animal research shows that fermented wheat germ can increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with buprenorphine and fermented wheat germ extract. Buprenorphine has some mild serotonin activity, and animal studies hint that this supplement may nudge brain serotonin levels upward. Put the two together and, in theory, you could stack a little extra serotonin effect. That's the concern behind this interaction.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal research only, not from people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. If both were affecting you, signs of too much serotonin can include feeling restless or agitated, a racing heart, sweating, shaking, or shivering. If you ever feel that way, reach out for help. Before combining these, please run it by your prescriber or pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Buprenorphine page
“Buprenorphine (Subutex, Butrans, Sublocade, Brixadi) is an opioid, and slowed breathing is the harm that matters most with it, so I read this particular list warily. Over a third of the ingredients on it are sedating in their own right, alcohol chief among them, and stacking sedatives on an opioid deepens drowsiness and can suppress br…”

About Fermented Wheat Germ Extract
What is Fermented Wheat Germ Extract?
- Cancer supportive care (as a complementary product)
- Immune support
- General wellness during cancer treatment
- Antioxidant support
- Fatigue during illness
Fermented wheat germ extract is a supplement made by fermenting wheat germ with yeast, and it is most often marketed for people going through cancer treatment. While some early research and a few small studies are interesting, the overall evidence is limited and far from conclusive, so it should never replace standard medical care. Talk with your oncologist or pharmacist before using it, since it is a supplement and not an approved treatment.
