Garcinia and Troglitazone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Garcinia interacts with whole categories of medication. Troglitazone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Garcinia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Troglitazone

Troglitazone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.
There have been reports of acute hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes associated with garcinia, when taken alone or in combination with other ingredients. Case reports collected from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network suggest this risk may be greater in people who carry the HLA B*35:01 allele.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing about combining Garcinia with Troglitazone: this isn't about one changing how strong the other is. It's about overlap. Troglitazone was actually pulled from the U.S. market years ago specifically because it could cause serious liver injury. Garcinia, for its part, has its own scattered reports of liver problems, including acute hepatitis with rising liver enzymes.

So the worry is simply two stresses on the same organ at the same time. Stacking them could theoretically raise your odds of liver trouble (think fatigue, nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine). To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how both behave, not proven case-by-case. Still, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before pairing these.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

2 of 2

Troglitazone also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
HCA reduces fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in animal models, theoretically by delaying glucose absorption. This effect has not been reported in humans.

First, a heads-up: Troglitazone (Rezulin) was actually pulled from the U.S. market years ago because it could damage the liver, so most people won't run into it today. If you do come across it, here's the idea behind pairing it with Garcinia. Troglitazone lowers blood sugar by helping your body respond better to insulin. Garcinia's main ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, has been shown in animal studies to also nudge blood sugar down, possibly by slowing how fast you absorb sugar.

So the theory is that the two together could lower your blood sugar a bit too much, leading to hypoglycemia, shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded. This is only a theoretical concern and hasn't been seen in people. Garcinia also carries its own liver-safety questions, which matters with a liver-sensitive drug. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Troglitazone page

“Most people taking troglitazone (Rezulin) are managing type 2 diabetes, and this list reflects that. The great majority of the 280 flagged ingredients act on blood sugar, most lowering it and a few raising it, so pairing them with a diabetes medication makes glucose control less predictable and can tip it too low.”

Garcinia
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
  • Curbing sugar and carb cravings
  • Supporting metabolism
  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control. The scientific evidence is weak and mixed, with most studies showing only small or no meaningful weight effects, and rare reports of liver problems raise safety concerns. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have liver issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
