EMPAGLIFLOZIN (Jardiance)

Theoretically, grapefruit juice may increase the levels and clinical effects of empagliflozin.
Animal research suggests grapefruit juice increases the peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of empagliflozin, possibly due to inhibition of metabolism by uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT). This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your Synjardy XR combines two diabetes medicines: empagliflozin and metformin. The interaction on file involves only the empagliflozin part. In lab and animal studies, grapefruit juice seemed to slow down an enzyme called UGT that helps clear empagliflozin, which could let a bit more of it build up. In theory, that might slightly strengthen its effects, things like more urination or a touch lower blood sugar. Importantly, this has only been seen in animals, never proven in people.

So this is more of a theoretical caution than a real-world alarm. Enjoying grapefruit now and then is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you eat it often or drink the juice daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your blood sugar.
