Hibiscus Sabdariffa + Amlodipine Besilate
Amlodipine Besilate brand name: Istin.
Amlodipine Besilate falls into 2 drug categories that Hibiscus Sabdariffa can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking Hibiscus sabdariffa with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with whole categories of medication. Amlodipine Besilate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hibiscus Sabdariffa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Amlodipine Besilate
Amlodipine Besilate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.
Most clinical evidence suggests that taking Hibiscus sabdariffa reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In animal research, Hibiscus sabdariffa increased the hypotensive effects of single doses of losartan and amlodipine.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: amlodipine (Istin) is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes your blood vessels to bring your pressure down. Hibiscus, especially as a regular tea or concentrated supplement, gently nudges blood pressure down too. So when you stack the two, the lowering effect can add up a bit more than you planned.
If your blood pressure dips too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or notice your ankles a little puffy from the amlodipine itself. The good news is this concern is mostly theoretical, based on pharmacology and some animal studies, not strong human proof. An occasional cup of hibiscus tea is unlikely to be a problem, but before using concentrated hibiscus supplements daily, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Amlodipine Besilate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for hibiscus and amlodipine. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break amlodipine down. In the test tube, hibiscus extract slows that enzyme a little. If that happened in real life, amlodipine could clear more slowly and build up slightly, which might nudge its effects up. With this medicine, that could mean more dizziness, flushing, headache, or ankle swelling, and possibly a bigger drop in blood pressure.
The important part: this is only a theoretical lab finding and has not actually been seen in people. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements are less predictable, so it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

About Hibiscus Sabdariffa
What is Hibiscus Sabdariffa?
- High blood pressure
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Fever and general wellness
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Evidence for other uses is limited, and while hibiscus tea is generally well tolerated in food amounts, concentrated supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it for a medical condition.
