Hibiscus Sabdariffa + Atomoxetine
Atomoxetine brand name: Strattera.
Hibiscus Sabdariffa has a minor interaction with Atomoxetine. Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP2D6 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Atomoxetine
Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2D6. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down atomoxetine (Strattera). In a lab dish, hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in people, atomoxetine could clear out a little slower and build up, which might mean stronger effects or more side effects like a faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, or a poor appetite.
That said, this is purely theoretical. It has only been seen in test-tube studies, never in actual patients, and it's rated a minor concern. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to be an issue, but concentrated supplements are less predictable. If you want to use hibiscus regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Atomoxetine page
“Atomoxetine (Strattera), the non-stimulant ADHD medicine, leaves the body mainly through one liver enzyme, CYP2D6, and that dependence is why this list deserves genuine care. Sixty of the 77 ingredients here, goldenseal and CBD among them, may slow that enzyme, letting atomoxetine build up along with side effects like a faster heartbea…”

About Hibiscus Sabdariffa
What is Hibiscus Sabdariffa?
- High blood pressure
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Fever and general wellness
Hibiscus sabdariffa is a tart, cranberry-flavored plant most often consumed as a tea, and its best-studied use is for mildly lowering blood pressure. Evidence for other uses is limited, and while hibiscus tea is generally well tolerated in food amounts, concentrated supplements should be used cautiously and avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it for a medical condition.
About Atomoxetine
What Is Atomoxetine Used For?
Brand name: Strattera
Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.
