In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2D6. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: this concern is only theoretical. In a lab dish, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed down an enzyme called CYP2D6, which your body uses to process hydrocodone. Interestingly, hydrocodone is a bit of a prodrug, meaning CYP2D6 converts part of it into hydromorphone, a stronger active form. If that conversion is blocked, you'd theoretically get slightly less of that stronger painkilling effect, though plenty of the original hydrocodone is still active.

Honestly, this has never been reported in real people, and a cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to matter. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are the bigger unknown. If you take hydrocodone regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding hibiscus supplements.

Here's the gist for hibiscus and hydrocodone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear hydrocodone from your body. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, hydrocodone could hang around a little longer, which in theory might nudge up its effects and side effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

The honest part: this is theoretical only, based on test-tube research, and it hasn't been seen in actual people. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Since hydrocodone is a strong opioid, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding hibiscus supplements.
