Panobinostat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body clears panobinostat (Farydak) largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract has been shown to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, panobinostat could clear a little more slowly and build up, which in theory could mean stronger effects and more side effects like diarrhea, nausea, tiredness, low blood counts, or heart rhythm changes.

But I want to keep this in perspective. This is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it has never actually been reported in people. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Since panobinostat is serious chemotherapy, please run any hibiscus product past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

Brand name: Farydak

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
