Hoodia and Hydrochlorothiazide, Labetalol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Hoodia interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydrochlorothiazide, Labetalol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Hoodia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Labetalol

Hydrochlorothiazide, Labetalol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Trandate HCT pairs two blood pressure lowering medicines: labetalol (which relaxes and slows the heart) and hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid and salt). The concern with hoodia is the opposite direction. Some research suggests hoodia can actually nudge blood pressure up, which could work against your medication and make it harder to keep your numbers in a healthy range.

To be honest, this is a theoretical worry based on how hoodia behaves, not from studies of people taking these two together, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you've been relying on hoodia and notice your blood pressure creeping higher, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes on your own.

BETA-BLOCKERS

2 of 2

Hydrochlorothiazide, Labetalol also falls under BETA-BLOCKERS.

Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).

Your Trandate HCT combo pairs labetalol, a beta-blocker that also relaxes blood vessels, with hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. Both work together to bring your blood pressure down. The concern here is mostly with the labetalol part. Lab studies suggest hoodia may gently stimulate the same beta receptors your labetalol is trying to calm, and some research found hoodia can nudge blood pressure and heart rate up. In theory, that could push against your medication and leave your blood pressure or pulse a little higher than your doctor wants.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on pharmacology rather than strong human studies on this exact pairing. Hoodia also hasn't shown reliable weight-loss benefit. I wouldn't start it without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since your readings matter here.

About Hoodia

What is Hoodia?

Hoodia
  • Appetite suppression
  • Weight loss
  • Reducing food cravings
  • Traditional use for hunger and thirst on long journeys

Hoodia is a succulent plant from southern Africa that is marketed as an appetite suppressant for weight loss, but solid human evidence that it actually works is lacking. The few quality studies done have not shown meaningful weight loss, and some products on the market may not even contain real hoodia. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
