Why this applies to Treprostinil (Inh)

Treprostinil (Inh) falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the concern with inhaled treprostinil (Tyvaso): this medicine works by relaxing and widening the blood vessels in your lungs to ease the high pressure that makes you feel short of breath and worn out. Hoodia, on the other hand, has been shown in some research to actually raise blood pressure. So in theory, taking hoodia could push against what your treprostinil is trying to do, making it a bit less effective and possibly letting your symptoms creep back.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical interaction based on how these two work, not something proven in people taking them together. Still, with a serious lung condition like PAH, I wouldn't want anything working against your treatment. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before trying hoodia.

What Is Treprostinil Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand name: Tyvaso

Treprostinil oral inhalation is used to treat two serious lung conditions that raise pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. It helps improve how much physical activity you can do.

Tyvaso inhalation solution and Tyvaso DPI are both indicated to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3). Clinical studies establishing effectiveness in PAH primarily included patients with moderate symptoms (NYHA Class III) whose PAH was idiopathic, heritable, or related to connective tissue disease. Studies in PH-ILD primarily included patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema, or connective tissue disease-related lung disease.
