Voriconazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Ipriflavone interacts with.

Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.

Here's the basic idea with these two. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear voriconazole out of your system. Ipriflavone is thought to slow that same enzyme down. If it does, voriconazole could leave your body more slowly and its levels could creep up, which may mean more side effects like blurred or changed vision, light sensitivity, nausea, headaches, or higher liver enzymes on bloodwork.

That said, I don't want to scare you. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not real patients, so it's theoretical at this point. Still, voriconazole is a drug doctors already watch closely. Before combining them, check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can decide if any monitoring makes sense.

Ipriflavone is a synthetic isoflavone studied mainly for bone health and osteoporosis, but high-quality research has not shown that it reliably prevents fractures or builds strong bone. Because it can lower white blood cell counts in some people and its long-term safety is not well established, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Voriconazole

What Is Voriconazole Used For?

Brand name: Vfend

Voriconazole treats several serious fungal infections. Across all available forms — tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) injection — it is used for invasive aspergillosis (a dangerous mold infection), candidemia (Candida fungus in the bloodstream) in patients who are not neutropenic (not severely low on white blood cells), other deep-tissue Candida infections, and serious infections caused by Scedosporium apiospermum or Fusarium species in patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded to other antifungal treatments.

Esophageal candidiasis (a Candida infection of the esophagus, the swallowing tube) is also an approved use for most formulations. Note on the oral tablet form (generic voriconazole tablets): that specific tablet formulation is approved for patients aged 12 to 14 years weighing at least 50 kg, and all patients 15 years and older — not for younger or smaller children. The oral suspension and the IV injection are approved for patients 2 years and older for most of these conditions.
