Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Talinolol is a beta-blocker, the kind of medicine doctors prescribe to bring down blood pressure and steady the heart. Khat works in the opposite direction. Its stimulant chemicals, mainly cathinone (which acts a lot like amphetamine), push your blood pressure and heart rate up. So when you chew khat while taking Talinolol, the two are basically fighting each other, and the khat can blunt how well your Talinolol controls your numbers.

In real life, that could mean your blood pressure creeps higher than it should, your pulse races, and you may feel jittery or anxious. The evidence here is moderate and partly theoretical, but it points one clear way. Also worth noting: khat is illegal in the U.S. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with your blood pressure medicine.
