Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: telmisartan (Micardis) is doing its best to relax your blood vessels and bring your pressure down. Khat works in the opposite direction. Its main active chemical, cathinone, acts a lot like an amphetamine and pushes blood pressure up. So mixing the two is basically a tug of war, and khat can blunt the benefit you're getting from your medication.

In real life that could mean your numbers creep higher than expected, you don't get the heart and stroke protection telmisartan is meant to give, and you may feel side effects of the stimulant itself like a racing heart or feeling wired. Keep in mind khat is illegal in the U.S. and risky on its own. If this applies to you, please be honest with your doctor or pharmacist so they can help safely.

What Is Telmisartan Used For?

Brand name: Micardis

Telmisartan tablets — sold as Micardis and the generic telmisartan — treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Micardis and telmisartan tablets are also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes in patients 55 or older who are at high cardiovascular risk and cannot take ACE inhibitors. This use is for patients with a history of conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), or high-risk diabetes with signs of organ damage.
