Ashwagandha and Telmisartan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Telmisartan

Telmisartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that ashwagandha might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: telmisartan already works to relax your blood vessels and bring your blood pressure down. Ashwagandha may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own, so taking the two together could nudge your numbers a little lower than the medication alone would. If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or a bit woozy when you stand up quickly.

I'll be honest, this concern comes mainly from animal studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Most people do fine, but it's worth keeping an eye on. If you'd like to try ashwagandha, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch your blood pressure readings as you get started.

About Telmisartan

What Is Telmisartan Used For?

Brand name: Micardis

Telmisartan tablets — sold as Micardis and the generic telmisartan — treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Micardis and telmisartan tablets are also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes in patients 55 or older who are at high cardiovascular risk and cannot take ACE inhibitors. This use is for patients with a history of conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), or high-risk diabetes with signs of organ damage.
