Manganese and Sparfloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Sparfloxacin

Sparfloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Manganese interacts with.

Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: manganese is a mineral that carries a positive charge, and minerals like that (think calcium or iron) can grab onto antibiotics like Sparfloxacin in your stomach. When they bind together, less of the antibiotic gets absorbed into your bloodstream. That means a weaker dose actually reaching the infection, and the worry is your infection might not clear up the way it should.

The good news is this is mostly a theoretical concern based on how these minerals behave, not a long list of real-world reports. Sparfloxacin is an active drug (not a prodrug), so this only weakens it, it won't make it stronger. The easy fix is timing. Ask your pharmacist about spacing your manganese a few hours apart from your dose so they don't meet in your gut.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sparfloxacin page

“Sparfloxacin (Zagam) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with two known quirks: it can stretch the heart's QT interval, and it makes skin burn faster in the sun. Much of this list presses on exactly those weak points, so combine carefully and get familiar with the major-rated entries before adding a supplement.”

About Manganese

What is Manganese?

Manganese
  • Bone health support
  • Antioxidant and enzyme support
  • Filling dietary gaps
  • Metabolism support
  • Wound healing

Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.
