Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Nardil (phenelzine): this is a sedating antidepressant, and Marsh Labrador tea has volatile oils that may add to that calming, drowsy effect. Combining the two could, in theory, leave you more groggy, dizzy, or unsteady than usual, especially when you first stand up.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This interaction is theoretical, based on how the plant behaves in the body rather than real cases with phenelzine. The bigger worry is the plant itself, since it contains grayanotoxins that can be genuinely toxic, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with an MAOI like this.

About Marsh Labrador Tea

What is Marsh Labrador Tea?

Marsh Labrador Tea
  • Colds and respiratory complaints
  • Cough and congestion
  • Mild aches and joint discomfort
  • Topical relief of skin irritation, swelling, and insect bites
  • Traditional use as a diuretic

Marsh Labrador tea is a bog-growing shrub used in folk medicine for coughs, colds, and skin problems, but high-quality human evidence for any use is lacking. Because it contains grayanotoxins (andromedotoxin) that can be poisonous, it is not considered safe for routine use, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid it.

About Phenelzine

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine treats depression in people described as “atypical,” “nonendogenous,” or “neurotic.” These patients often have a mix of anxiety and depression, along with phobic or hypochondriacal features (intense fears or excessive worry about health).

It is rarely the first antidepressant tried. It is more suitable for people who did not respond to the drugs more commonly used. Evidence is less conclusive for severe depression with endogenous features. These uses apply to Phenelzine Sulfate tablets and Nardil tablets.
