Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist: your body partly clears almotriptan (Axert) using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a lab dish, an extract of Padang cassia slowed that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in people, almotriptan could hang around longer and build up a bit, which might mean stronger effects and more of its usual side effects, like drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, flushing, or a tight feeling in the chest or throat.

I want to be honest about the strength here. This is only test-tube evidence, not human studies, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. If you're considering those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
