Padang Cassia and Alprazolam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Alprazolam

Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Xanax and this type of cinnamon. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear alprazolam out of your system. In test-tube studies, an extract of Padang cassia slowed that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, alprazolam could hang around longer and build up, which means stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or feeling more sedated than usual.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This is only laboratory data, not something proven in people, so it's more of a theoretical concern. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alprazolam page

“Sedation stacking is the core danger with alprazolam (Xanax), a benzodiazepine for anxiety and panic, and this list deserves genuine care rather than a quick skim. Dozens of entries, alcohol chief among them, deepen its drowsiness and can slow breathing, while an even larger group changes how the body clears the drug through the CYP3A4…”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
