Baricitinib falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the simple version: this isn't about Padang cassia changing how your body handles baricitinib. It's about both being a little tough on the liver. Baricitinib can occasionally raise liver enzymes on its own, which is why your doctor checks bloodwork while you're on it. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, a compound that, in very large amounts, has stressed the liver in some people.

Stack a concentrated cinnamon supplement on top of baricitinib and you're theoretically adding two liver burdens together. To be clear, this concern is based on pharmacology, not strong human studies, and the everyday amount you sprinkle on oatmeal or toast is not a worry. The caution applies to concentrated cinnamon capsules. Before starting one, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your liver tests.

About Baricitinib

What Is Baricitinib Used For?

Brand name: Olumiant

Olumiant (baricitinib) tablets are approved for three conditions in adults. It treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in people who haven't responded well enough to one or more TNF blocker medications. It also treats severe alopecia areata (significant hair loss from an autoimmune condition).

Olumiant is additionally approved to treat COVID-19 in hospitalized adults who need supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or ECMO (a machine that does the work of the heart and lungs). Each use has specific limitations — for example, Olumiant should not be combined with other JAK inhibitors or certain strong immunosuppressants for rheumatoid arthritis or alopecia areata.
