Ciclesonide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's something worth knowing about ciclesonide (Alvesco, Omnaris, Zetonna). It's actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into its active form, and the enzyme CYP3A4 helps clear the active drug afterward. Padang cassia, a type of cassia cinnamon, has been shown in lab dish studies only to slow CYP3A4 down a little. In theory, that could let slightly more active drug linger.

The honest truth is this concern is pretty weak and theoretical, based on test tube work, not real people. Inhaled ciclesonide also stays mostly in the lungs with very little reaching the bloodstream. Cinnamon in your food or coffee is no worry at all. If you're thinking about concentrated cinnamon capsules, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Ciclesonide Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Omnaris, Alvesco, Zetonna

Alvesco (ciclesonide) inhaler is approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma as a preventive therapy in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is taken regularly to reduce airway inflammation and help prevent asthma symptoms — not to relieve a sudden attack.

Alvesco is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat sudden wheezing or acute asthma episodes. It is also not approved for children under 12.
