Demeclocycline falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the simple version: demeclocycline is one of the tetracycline antibiotics, and like others in that family it can occasionally stress the liver. Padang cassia is a cassia-type cinnamon that naturally contains coumarin, a compound that, in large or concentrated amounts, has been linked to liver irritation. So the worry isn't that cinnamon changes how your antibiotic works. It's that two things that can each tax the liver might add up.

To be clear, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these substances behave, not on strong human studies. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. The caution is really about concentrated cinnamon supplements, especially if you have any liver problems. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
