In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for dexchlorpheniramine (Polaramine). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this allergy medicine down. In a lab dish, an extract of Padang cassia slowed that same enzyme. In theory, if the enzyme works slower, more of the drug could hang around, which might bump up its usual effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

The important part: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it may not happen at all. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal is nothing to worry about. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. If you take or are thinking about those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Chlorpheniramine is used to temporarily relieve common allergy symptoms caused by hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other upper respiratory allergies. These include runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

These uses are supported across multiple products — including tablets (such as Aller-chlor, Allergy, Allergy Relief, Allergy Time, Anti Allergy, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate), extended-release tablets (Allergy Relief and Chlorphen-12), the oral solution Ed Chlorped Jr, and the inhalers ClorRelief and ClorRelief KIDs.
