Padang Cassia and Ertugliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Ertugliflozin

Ertugliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: cinnamon like Padang Cassia may nudge your blood sugar down a little on its own. Your ertugliflozin (Steglatro) already works hard to lower blood sugar by flushing extra glucose out through your urine. Stack the two together and the effect could add up, so your numbers might dip lower than expected.

By itself, ertugliflozin rarely causes serious low blood sugar, but watch for signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded, especially if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Keep in mind the evidence here is modest and based on lower quality studies. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is very unlikely to matter. A daily concentrated cinnamon supplement is a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ertugliflozin page

“Ertugliflozin (Steglatro) works by making your kidneys flush out extra sugar, and nearly all 256 supplements on this page pull on that same lever, so this is a list to approach carefully rather than casually. Most entries either add to the glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of a low, or, like niacin, push blood sugar the other…”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
