Etoposide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for etoposide (VePesid, VP16). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this chemo drug. Lab studies suggest that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down. If that happens, etoposide could linger longer and build up, which in theory means stronger effects and more side effects, things like a bigger drop in your blood counts, more nausea, mouth sores, fatigue, or higher infection risk.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, not from people, so it's theoretical. Sprinkling cinnamon on food is not a concern. But while you're on chemo, please run any concentrated cinnamon supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

About Etoposide

What Is Etoposide Used For?

Brand names: VePesid, VP16, Etopophos

Etoposide injection (available as Avopef, Etopophos, Toposar, and Etoposide) is used to treat refractory testicular tumors — cancers that have already been treated with surgery, radiation, and other chemotherapy — always in combination with other cancer drugs. It is also used for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) as a first-line treatment, given together with other chemotherapy and, in the case of Avopef, with immunotherapy as well.

Etoposide capsules (VePesid and Etoposide capsules) are approved for small cell lung cancer as first-line treatment in combination with other chemotherapy agents. Capsule forms are not approved for testicular cancer, as the label notes that adequate data on their use in that setting are not available.
