ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Linagliptin

Linagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Tradjenta (linagliptin): this isn't about your liver breaking the drug down faster or slower. Instead, it's a simple additive effect. Padang cassia, a type of cassia cinnamon, may nudge your blood sugar down a bit on its own. Stack that on top of linagliptin, which already works to lower your blood sugar, and the two together could push your numbers a little lower than expected.

Honestly, the evidence here is on the weaker side and the effect is usually mild, so there's no need to panic. Linagliptin alone rarely causes low blood sugar, but watch for shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded, especially if you also take other diabetes meds. Kitchen-amounts of cinnamon are fine. Before starting a concentrated supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Linagliptin page

“Linagliptin (Tradjenta) helps people with type 2 diabetes bring blood sugar down, so most of the 284 supplements and herbs on this page interact for one basic reason: they lower glucose too, and stacking them can drop you into hypoglycemia. I'd read this list with genuine care rather than a shrug.”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
