Padang Cassia and Tobutamide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Tobutamide

Tobutamide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that Padang cassia can reduce blood glucose levels in healthy patients and in patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes). Theoretically, Padang cassia might have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetes drugs. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with tolbutamide (Mobenol). This is an older sulfonylurea that lowers your blood sugar by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin. Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) seems to have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect in some studies, so taking the two together could push your sugar down a little further than the medicine alone.

If your blood sugar dips too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or unusually hungry. The evidence here is fairly limited and the cinnamon effect is modest, so a sprinkle on your oatmeal is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are the bigger question, partly because cassia cinnamon also contains coumarin, which can stress the liver in large amounts. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a supplement, and keep monitoring your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tobutamide page

“Long as this list is, it mostly tells one story, and with Tobutamide (Mobenol), a sulfonylurea that lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, that story deserves genuine care. Most of the 215 moderate entries add to the drug's effect and invite hypoglycemia, the shaky, sweaty, sometimes dangerous low.”

About Padang Cassia

What is Padang Cassia?

  • Adding flavor to food
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antimicrobial purposes
  • Antioxidant support

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
