Quetiapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for combining passion flower with quetiapine. Your body relies heavily on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break quetiapine down. The concern on file is that passion flower may gently speed up that enzyme, which could clear quetiapine a little faster and slightly weaken its effect. In theory, that might mean less control of symptoms like mood swings, sleep trouble, or psychosis.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This idea comes only from lab studies, not from people, and the effect was much weaker than known enzyme boosters. So it's a minor, theoretical concern. There's also a more practical point: both can be sedating, so together they may make you extra drowsy. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
