DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol

Bendroflumethiazide, Nadolol falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using pu-erh tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine, especially in excessive amounts, can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your Corzide pill combines two medicines: bendroflumethiazide (a water pill) and nadolol (a beta-blocker). The water pill side can lower your potassium over time, and that is where pu-erh tea comes in. Pu-erh contains caffeine, and large amounts of caffeine may nudge potassium a little lower too. So in theory, drinking a lot of pu-erh while on this medication could add to the potassium drop.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical, minor concern based on how these things work, not strong human proof. A cup or two a day is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you notice muscle cramps, weakness, or an odd heartbeat, or if you drink large amounts daily, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your potassium.
