Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Concomitant use of caffeine and quinolones can decrease caffeine clearance and increase effects and risk of adverse effects.

Here's the honest picture for doripenem (Doribax). The interaction we have on file is really about caffeine, not the antibiotic itself. The idea is that some antibiotics slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, so the caffeine in your pu-erh tea could hang around a bit longer and feel a little stronger. That might mean more jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, or trouble sleeping.

The catch is that this concern was studied with quinolone antibiotics, and doripenem is actually a carbapenem, a different class. It does not affect caffeine the same way those drugs do, so for most people this is theoretical at best. Doripenem is also given by IV in a hospital, so a pharmacist is right there. If caffeine ever bothers you, just ask them.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
