ESTROGENS

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about this pairing. The interaction runs the other way than you might expect: it's the estrone that affects the caffeine in your pu-erh tea, not the tea changing your hormone levels. Estrogens like estrone can slow down how your liver clears caffeine, so the caffeine tends to linger and build up.

In real life, that means a cup or two of pu-erh might hit you harder than usual. Think jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired and anxious. This is a theoretical concern, and most people who enjoy tea in normal amounts do fine. If you notice the caffeine bothering you more, simply cutting back usually helps. Don't change your estrone on your own, but feel free to check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

“Hormone therapy lives or dies by a steady blood level, and estrone (Ortho-Est), an estrogen taken mostly for menopause symptoms, is no exception, so this list calls for genuine care. Pu-erh tea is a fermented, aged form of tea made from the same plant as green and black tea.
