Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Isoproterenol (Isuprel) is a beta-agonist that revs up your heart, making it beat harder and faster. It's typically used in a hospital or monitored setting for things like a dangerously slow heart rate. Here's the concern: pu-erh tea contains caffeine, which is also a stimulant. Stacking caffeine on top of isoproterenol could, in theory, add to the heart effects, things like a racing pulse, palpitations, jitteriness, or a feeling of pounding in your chest.

I'll be straight with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how these two work, not strong human data. An everyday cup of tea is unlikely to be a big deal, but large or concentrated amounts could matter more. Since isoproterenol is used in carefully watched situations, just mention your tea habit to the care team or your pharmacist.

Pu-erh tea is a fermented, aged form of tea made from the same plant as green and black tea.
