Pu-erh Tea and Phenelzine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

Why this applies to Phenelzine Sulfate

Phenelzine Sulfate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patients switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: pu-erh tea is a real caffeine source, and phenelzine (Nardil) is an MAOI, a class of antidepressants that's famously sensitive to certain foods and stimulants. When you're on an MAOI, your body can't break down some compounds the way it normally would, so a big load of caffeine can push your blood pressure up more than expected. In theory, drinking large amounts could raise the risk of a sudden spike (think pounding headache, racing heart, flushing, or feeling unwell).

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology and an old case report involving lots of coffee. A normal cup or two is unlikely to cause trouble, but heavy daily intake is where caution matters. Since phenelzine has strict diet and stimulant rules, please run your tea habit by your pharmacist or doctor.

  • General antioxidant support

Pu-erh tea is a fermented, aged form of tea made from the same plant as green and black tea. About Phenelzine

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
