Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the statin drug lovastatin, which is metabolized by CYP3A4. Combining red yeast rice with CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase serum levels of lovastatin from red yeast rice.

Here's the thing about Abametapir (Xeglyze): it's a head lice treatment you rub into the scalp, and it happens to block the CYP3A4 enzyme in your liver, at least for a short while. Red yeast rice contains lovastatin, a natural statin that your body normally clears using that very same enzyme. So if Abametapir slows that enzyme down, the lovastatin from your red yeast rice could build up higher than usual.

Higher statin levels can mean more muscle aches, weakness, or, rarely, muscle and liver problems. The good news is this concern is theoretical, it's a one-time topical treatment, and the statin amount in red yeast rice varies a lot. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
