Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the statin drug lovastatin, which is metabolized by CYP3A4. Combining red yeast rice with CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase serum levels of lovastatin from red yeast rice.

Here the spotlight isn't really on your leukemia medicine, it's on the red yeast rice. That supplement contains lovastatin, a natural statin, and your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break that lovastatin down. Asciminib (Scemblix) can mildly block that same enzyme, so in theory the lovastatin in red yeast rice could build up higher than expected.

When statin levels climb, the main worry is muscle problems, things like unexplained aching, soreness, or weakness, and rarely liver irritation. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs behave, not strong real-world data. Statin content in supplements also varies a lot. Since you're managing cancer, please loop in your oncology pharmacist or doctor before adding red yeast rice.

What Is Asciminib Used For?

Brand name: Scemblix

Scemblix (asciminib) is used to treat adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia in chronic phase (Ph+ CML-CP) — a type of blood cancer driven by an abnormal protein called BCR-ABL1. It covers three groups: people newly diagnosed with Ph+ CML-CP, people who have already been treated for Ph+ CML-CP, and people whose cancer carries a specific mutation called T315I that makes it harder to treat.

The use in newly diagnosed Ph+ CML-CP was approved under accelerated approval based on early response data. Continued approval for that specific use may depend on results from confirmatory trials confirming long-term clinical benefit.
