Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the drug lovastatin. Lovastatin can cause liver damage in some people. Some clinical research suggests that supplements containing red yeast rice might increase liver enzyme levels in some, but not all, participants. Cases of acute hepatitis have been associated with red yeast rice. Combining it with hepatotoxic drugs might further increase this risk.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with red yeast rice and your birth control pill (drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol). Red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin, a statin that can occasionally stress the liver and bump up liver enzymes. Estrogen-containing pills can also put a little extra work on the liver. So in theory, using both together might add up and raise the chance of liver irritation.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how these products behave rather than strong studies. Most people won't run into trouble. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual fatigue. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can guide you.

Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the statin drug lovastatin, which is metabolized by CYP3A4. Combining red yeast rice with CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase serum levels of lovastatin from red yeast rice.

Here's the way this one works. Your birth control pill, Yasmin (drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol), is a mild blocker of the liver enzyme called CYP3A4. That same enzyme is what breaks down the lovastatin naturally found in red yeast rice. So in theory, taking them together could slow the breakdown of that statin and let a bit more of it build up in your blood.

If lovastatin levels climb, the usual statin-type side effects become more likely, mainly muscle aches, soreness, or weakness, and rarely liver irritation. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not strong proof, and red yeast rice products vary a lot in strength. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before you combine them.
