Red yeast rice contains varying levels of the drug lovastatin. Lovastatin can cause liver damage in some people. Some clinical research suggests that supplements containing red yeast rice might increase liver enzyme levels in some, but not all, participants. Cases of acute hepatitis have been associated with red yeast rice. Combining it with hepatotoxic drugs might further increase this risk.

Here's the thing that jumps out to me: your Liptruzet already contains atorvastatin, which is a statin. Red yeast rice naturally contains monacolin K, which is basically the same thing as the statin lovastatin. So if you take both, you're essentially doubling up on statin medicine without realizing it.

The main worry on file is the liver. Statins can occasionally raise liver enzymes, and red yeast rice has been linked to that too, even rare cases of hepatitis. Stacking them could add to that strain. You might also bump up your odds of muscle aches or weakness, a known statin side effect. This concern is mostly theoretical, but it's a real overlap. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Based on evaluation of data from the US Food and Drug Administration's adverse event reporting system (FAERS), it is recommended that red yeast rice products be avoided in people taking prescription statins.

Here's the thing about Liptruzet: the atorvastatin part is already a full-strength statin, and red yeast rice quietly contains its own statin (lovastatin) too. So stacking them is a bit like doubling up on the same kind of medicine. The trouble is, supplement labels don't reliably tell you how much active statin is inside, so you could end up with more total statin in your body than anyone intended.

When statin levels run high, the usual concern is muscle aches or weakness, and rarely a more serious muscle breakdown, plus added strain on the liver. This worry is based on how these drugs work rather than hard human trials, so don't panic. Still, since you already take a real statin, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding red yeast rice.
