Rhodiola + Aspirin, Pentazocine
Aspirin, Pentazocine brand name: Talwin Compound.
Aspirin, Pentazocine falls into 2 drug categories that Rhodiola can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rhodiola interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Pentazocine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rhodiola in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine
Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP1A2. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Talwin Compound (which pairs pentazocine, a pain reliever, with aspirin) and rhodiola. The theory is that rhodiola might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and since pentazocine is partly handled by that enzyme, levels could nudge upward. If that happened, you might notice a bit more of pentazocine's usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or lightheadedness.
The reassuring part: this is mostly a lab-dish theory, and a real human study found rhodiola didn't actually slow CYP1A2 in healthy volunteers. So a real-world problem here is unlikely and rated minor. Still, since rhodiola products vary a lot, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CNS DEPRESSANTS
2 of 2Aspirin, Pentazocine also falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Talwin Compound combines aspirin with pentazocine, an opioid pain reliever. The pentazocine part is what matters here, since opioids calm down the central nervous system and can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and slowed thinking. The idea is that adding Rhodiola, which may have mild effects on brain chemistry, could in theory stack on top of that and leave you more sedated or lightheaded than expected.
I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern backed only by a handful of anecdotal reports involving other sedating drugs, not pentazocine directly, and it is rated minor. Still, if you notice extra grogginess, unsteadiness, or low blood pressure (feeling faint when you stand), check in with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page
“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Rhodiola
What is Rhodiola?
- Fatigue and low energy
- Stress and coping (adaptogen)
- Mental performance and focus
- Mild depression
- Physical and exercise performance
Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. Some small studies suggest it may modestly reduce fatigue and improve mood, but the evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
