Almotriptan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for almotriptan (Axert). Your body partly clears this migraine medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in a person, almotriptan could hang around a bit longer and feel a little stronger. With a triptan, that might mean more of its usual effects, things like flushing, a tight or heavy feeling in the chest or throat, tingling, drowsiness, or mild dizziness.

The important part: this is only theoretical lab evidence, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. If you use those, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Almotriptan

What Is Almotriptan Used For?

Brand names: Axert, Almogran

Almotriptan tablets are used to treat migraine headache attacks — with or without aura — as they happen. They are not for preventing migraines before they start.

In adults, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine attacks. In adolescents ages 12 to 17, almotriptan tablets treat acute migraine headache pain in those who typically have attacks lasting 4 hours or more when untreated. Note that in adolescents, the effect on migraine-related symptoms such as nausea and light sensitivity was not established in clinical trials. Almotriptan is not indicated for cluster headache or for hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
