Rooibos + Effient
Effient brand name: Prasugrel.
Effient falls into 3 drug categories that Rooibos can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Effient falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Effient
Effient falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with Effient (prasugrel): it's a prodrug, meaning your body has to activate it before it can do its job of keeping platelets from clumping. Some of that activation involves the CYP2C19 enzyme. Lab studies hint that concentrated rooibos extract may slow down CYP2C19. With a typical drug, blocking that enzyme makes it build up, but because Effient must be switched on, a blocker could in theory leave a bit less of the active form working for you.
Honestly, this concern is very weak. It comes only from test-tube research, not from people, and Effient relies less on CYP2C19 than some other blood thinners do. A regular cup of rooibos tea is unlikely to matter at all. If you're thinking about strong rooibos supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Effient also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing about Effient (prasugrel): it's a prodrug, meaning your body has to switch it on before it can stop platelets from clumping. Several liver enzymes handle that activation. The note on file suggests rooibos may gently block one of those enzymes (CYP2C9), and in theory that could nudge prasugrel's blood-thinning effect a little higher, which might mean more bruising or bleeding.
But I want to keep this in perspective. This warning comes only from lab dish studies, not from people, so it's quite weak. A normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger unknown. Since prasugrel is serious heart medicine, just run any rooibos supplements past your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Effient also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing about Effient (prasugrel): it's a prodrug, meaning your body has to switch it on before it works. Enzymes like CYP3A4 help turn it into its active, clot-blocking form. So if rooibos blocks that enzyme, the worry isn't more drug piling up, it's that you might convert a bit less of it to the active form, which could slightly weaken its anti-clotting punch.
The good news: this comes from lab (test-tube) research using concentrated rooibos extracts, not from people drinking tea. A regular cup or two of rooibos is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. Since Effient protects you from heart attack and stroke, don't change anything on your own. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Rooibos only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Effient page lists 295 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 5 major · 248 moderate · 42 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Effient page
“Effient (prasugrel) keeps platelets from forming clots, usually after a stent or a heart attack, and I would not pair supplements with it casually. Roughly 200 ingredients on this list can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk, including two of the five rated major.”

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Prasugrel
What Is Prasugrel Used For?
Brand name: Prasugrel
Prasugrel tablets (brand names Effient and Prasugrel) are used to lower the risk of dangerous blood clots — including clots that can block a stent — in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes unstable angina (chest pain at rest) and heart attacks (both NSTEMI and STEMI types). It is used specifically in patients who are being treated with a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), in which a catheter is used to open a blocked coronary artery, often with a stent.
Effient has been shown to reduce the combined rate of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, or nonfatal stroke compared to clopidogrel — with the benefit driven mainly by fewer heart attacks.
